德克萨斯州（Texas），名称来自于印第安语，原意为“朋友（friends）、盟友（allies）”。

德州于1686年开始被西班牙殖民，并于1845年12月29日脱离墨西哥，加入美国，成为其第28个州。因其州旗上只有一颗星，德州还有一个别称，叫“孤星共和国（the Lone Star State）”。

虽然奥斯汀（Austin）只有25万人口，也没有德州的其他一些大城市，如休斯顿（Houston）、达拉斯（Dallas）等有名，但是奥斯汀可是德州的首府哦。还有别忘了一点，这个州议会大厦，可是小布什总统（President George W. Bush）当年出发向华盛顿迈进前的大本营。

Besides the typical wild, wild west scenery, did you also notice the symbolic bats in the upper left corner of the painting? Yes, bats are yet another attraction of Austin. And you can even find the symbol of bats everywhere in the city.

奥斯汀以蝙蝠著称，是因为她拥有号称“世界最大的城市内蝙蝠群落”。每天傍晚时分，成百上千的游人与本地人一起，聚集在议会大道大桥附近，以图能亲眼目睹上百万只蝙蝠成群结队出发猎食的壮观场面。

Austin is famous for bats, because she holds the “the world’s largest urban bat colony.” Hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists and locals alike gather near the Congress Avenue Bridge every evening to witness the spectacular moment when over 1 million bats start out for their daily night hunting.

Santa Rita 一号油井原来位于德州大学在里根郡的校区。油井于1923年5月28日开始产油，一直到1990年，才在持续生产了近60年后，最终关闭了。1940年，在德州历史协会的主持下，Santa Rita 的钻台被原样搬到了位于德州大学的奥斯汀校区内的现址。

Santa Rita No. 1 was located in Section 2, Block 2, University of Texas lands in Reagan County. It came in on 28 May, 1923, and was finally plugged in 1990, after almost 60 years of production. In 1940, under the leadership of the Texas State Historical Association, the Santa Rita rig was moved from its original site to the University of Texas campus in Austin.
